Landing the top position at the company where you once interned is akin to winning the career lottery. It’s a dream many pursue, sometimes with wide-open eyes and other times with blind hope. Yet, only a fortunate few achieve this feat. So, when Nike announced its new CEO, many began to look him up—some out of curiosity, others seeking inspiration from his remarkable journey. What they found was a true Cinderella story.
Elliott Hill embarked on his journey at Nike 36 years ago, not as an experienced executive but as a determined intern—one he had fervently sought for six long months.
On October 14, Elliott Hill will take over as President and CEO of Nike, succeeding John Donahoe. “Nike has always been an integral part of my identity, and I’m excited to help lead the company into an even brighter future. For 32 years, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside the best in the industry, helping to transform our company into the incredible place it is today,” Hill remarked in a statement.
He added, “I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the many employees and trusted partners I’ve collaborated with over the years, and I’m equally excited to forge new, impactful relationships that will drive us forward.”
From Nike Intern to Nike CEO
After graduating from Ohio University in 1988, Hill launched his career at Nike as an apparel sales representative intern. Following two years in that role, he transitioned to the sales team and swiftly moved up the ranks. By 1998, he was appointed Director of the Team Sports Division, a position he held for two years before becoming Vice President of EMEA Sales and Retail for three years. Shortly after, he advanced to Vice President and General Manager of USA Retail, and then, just a year later, to Vice President of USA Commerce.
After spending over 17 years at Nike, Hill took a year-long break before returning as Vice President of Global Retail. He held several key roles, and within seven years, he was promoted to President of Geographies and Sales. He then became President of Geographies and Integrated Marketplace, followed by his role as President of Consumer and Marketplace. His second stint at Nike lasted an impressive 14 years.
Afterward, he took on various roles, including board member, board president, and senior advisor at several companies. He also founded a company in the U.S.
In September 2024, the global sneaker and sportswear brand named him as the new CEO. Since then, Hill has updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect his new position, stating, “Incoming President and Chief Executive Officer at Nike.”
