Tasleem Ahmed, the founder of a ghostwriting agency, recently shared an inspiring story about an unconventional hiring success. In a LinkedIn post, Mr. Ahmed explained how he hired a candidate with no prior experience or resume, challenging the norms of traditional hiring methods. Rather than submitting a typical resume, Laiba Fateh sent in a video application on LinkedIn, highlighting her skills. Impressed by her approach, Mr. Ahmed took a leap of faith and gave her an opportunity. Six months later, he promoted her to equity partner, and she now manages all the agency’s operations.
The CEO emphasized that most skills can be taught and urged hiring managers to focus on a candidate’s eagerness to learn rather than polished resumes, encouraging them to give opportunities to those willing to grow.
“My most successful hire had ZERO experience. In true Gen-Z fashion, she didn’t even submit a resume. Instead, she did something much better: She created a video application and a landing page detailing why she deserved the role and shared it on LinkedIn. I chose her over 800 other applicants,” he wrote in his post.
“I’ve always believed that 99% of jobs can be taught, and Laiba is proof of this. Hiring managers, your best hire may not be the one with the most polished resume but the one eager to learn. Give people a chance,” he added.
The post has sparked energetic discussions, with many praising his innovative hiring strategy as a refreshing change.
According to one user, “A great manager who is open-minded and willing to teach can definitely recognize potential, even when it’s hidden,” the comment said. The drive to learn, grow, and improve should be key factors when hiring. That person with no experience might just become your best employee. Patience, guidance, and support can help develop top talent.”
“This is why character-based hiring is important,” said another user. Those willing to put in the effort are the best hires!”
“There is a lot of potential in our youth,” a third user said. They only require direction and perseverance.
I hope that many businesses will begin to use this approach. “There is gold to be mined in the unexplored area sometimes,” said a fourth.
