On Friday, a massive IT glitch disrupted computer systems worldwide. Airports, hospitals, banks, and businesses faced significant challenges as their computers either shut down or struggled to access networks. The primary cause of the disruption has been identified as an outage in Microsoft’s cloud services and related applications.
The incident caused significant travel disruptions, which have been noted as the most prominent consequence of this global IT outage. Hours after the event, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged that a CrowdStrike update had impacted IT systems worldwide. He stated that the company is working closely with CrowdStrike to resolve the issue.
When booking systems failed, airport employees had to manually check people in at locations in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, the US, India, and Hong Kong. After aircraft were canceled or delayed, large crowds of passengers gathered in arrival halls at airports across the globe, creating similar scenes of uncertainty and turmoil. Following the breakdown, communication problems caused several American carriers to ground their planes for hours at a time. Several European airlines temporarily ceased operations in the meantime.
Microsoft declared the Central US region had restored operations a few hours after the disruption. Updates on the service’s status were posted by Microsoft throughout the day via its official X account, Microsoft 365. The IT giant announced that all previously affected Microsoft 365 apps and services have been recovered as of 8:13 pm IST, after completing its mitigation efforts. “A monitoring phase is commencing to guarantee that the impact is entirely remedied.
